Cube: Sunday Times Magazine 50 years

I visited the Cube in Manchester to view the exhibit of work published in the Sunday Times Magazine. The space held an amazing collection of images taken by some of the worlds greatest photographers and photojournalists over the last 50 years. Some of the pictures were difficult to view, especially those taken in war zones and scenes of conflict. The pictures taken in Vietnam were shocking and were appalling scenes of hell on earth. The photos of animals being hunted in Africa were just so sad, a picture of a game hunter who had tracked and shot a giraffe nearly almost brought me to tears. I realise of course that is the whole point of this genre of photojournalism. It provokes the reader/viewer to question what they see, to open their eyes, to make them feel uncomfortable and to confront their senses to peoples, situations, destinations, cultures and moments in time and history, they would be unlikely to encounter in their own lives. The flip side to the exhibit were some wonderful images taken of natural phenomenal, public figures, movie stars and musicians which celebrated nature, colour, glamour, brilliance and achievement, perfectly conjuring moments in time and place.
