Ethical design should be built on a solid foundation. A frame work and structure to guide and aid the start of the design process. The sourcing and manufacture of fabrics and clothing should benefit communities across the globe while minimising the impact on the environment. This is the only way to combat poverty whilst reducing and addressing mounting environmental issues. This structure will also help and support people's in developing countries, to work towards financial stability being able to plan for their future needs and aspirations.
Looking at the production of garments and fashion textiles, The Ethical Fashion Forum has drawn up a list of criteria for the production of ethical fashion and textiles and I think it sums up perfectly all that we should be aiming to work towards and ad-hear to.
- Defending fair wages
- Defending working conditions and workers' rights
- Supporting sustainable livelihoods
- Addressing toxic pesticide and chemical use
- Using and / or developing eco- friendly fabrics and components
- Minimising water use
- Recycling and addressing energy efficiency and waste
- Developing or promoting sustainability standards for fashion
- Resources, training and / or awareness raising initiatives
- Animal rights
